Motors

Mega 16/25/4
Good power and good 3-D ability. Use 8 tooth on 8 cells and 9 or 10 tooth on 6 cells.

This motor has been described as the same power on 6s as a 30 size nitro.
8s will make the 4 turn motor more responsive and pull harder at the top end of your pitch range.

Mega 16/25/6
Lower KV (900) for high cell count. Tested on 9s1p 1500 Mah. Flys well with fresh batteries. (using 10 tooth pinion. 12 tooth exceeded the max head speed and damaged the heli! Be careful ! )

Mega 22/20/4 Good 3-D Motor. Great power on 4s2p 4000MAH Prolite Thunder Power. 17 tooth pinion. Very similar power to the 16/25/4 on 8s, only doesn't run hot. Batts max 110, Speed control max 120, Motor max temp 170. Make sure you manage your throttle curves wisely so as not to exceed the maximum head speed recommended by Quick of Japan. We have now geared down slightly to a 14 tooth pinion to slow the rotor head down a bit and allow for higher throttle curves. You may have to use a slightly shorter arm on your servo's to achieve the clearance necessary to run such a small pinion.

Mega 22/30/X if the 20 just isn't enough! The 22/30/x is a bit of an overkill though. It weighs a bit more than I like for this little heli too. It is capable of much more power than you would ever need for a heli this size.

Mega 600/30/4 Outrunner. This is a new motor from Mega Motors USA. Update to follow.

The larger diameter motors are a bit hard to fit due to elevator linkage interference problems. I have discovered that if you run a minimum 17 tooth pinion and push the elevator servo back as far as possible then you will have room for them.  The general rule is to make sure that you do not choose a motor with a diameter larger than 37mm.

ESC's

Castle Creations HV 45. This speed control lets you run up to 12 lipo cells in series. That's 50 volts!

Jazz 40-6-18 - 6 cells max

BEC's

Any sort of BEC circuit 2 amps or better. 6volt output makes the hitec servos work awesome!  If using a JAZZ esc you do not need an external BEC but you are limited to 6 cell lipo max.

Batteries

Right now we are running with 2 X 2100 3S1P Thunder Power Lipo.  What the heck does this mean?

2 = 2  separate battery packs
2100 = the capacity of the battery packs
3S means 3 cells in series in each pack
1P means 1 cell in parallel.

So, what we have is 2 separate 3 cell or 11.1 volt packs running in series to achieve 22.2 volts nominal. This gives about 10 minutes of good flight time with aerobatics. The packs just barely get warm too.

The manufacturer recommends a 3000 + capacity 4 cell lipo.
We have not tested the EP-8 this way. High Voltage set ups are much more efficient than lower voltage high amperage draw configurations.

UPDATE: We have tested the new Align 2000 MAH 18c packs with very good results! A little more power with the same flight time!

We have tested the 9S1P. That's 33.3 volts! Good power on the 16/25/6 Mega.

Details:

3 align 1500MAH 3s1p in series. 11 tooth pinion. Mega 16/25/6
Flight time 6 minutes. Hard 3-D

Align Batteries seem to not hold up well after 20 or so uses. 2000 18c packs lack the punch they had new. Also the 1500 packs seem to have lost there edge.

We are testing the 2000MAH diamond 10c packs now. They are light and seem to be holding up fairly well.

Update: The 22/20/4 motor works very well on a 4s2p Thunder
Power prolite pack. We have more than enough head speed and good 8 minutes of 3-D power before they fell off a bit.

What's New?

02/03/06

01/31/05
Due to contract expiration with the Chinese factory who made the blades for the EP-8,  QJ will no longer be distributing CF blades with the kits and will be making their own wooden blades to be included with all kits starting in Feb.  Also the FG canopy will be replaced with a lighter plastic blown canopy.

is now in production of G-10 side frames for the EP8!  (update: CF frames in ice blue are also available)

08/02/05
The EP8 has been updated. New frames that accept different servos instead of single servo fitting. 25 tooth tail drive gear and metal pitch plate are standard now as well as an upgraded tail box plate with larger bearings. We have received our demo 3-D version for testing. More to follow on this.
